Tax Preparer Professional Certificate
Train to prepare individual tax returns accurately, ethically, and on time — the way a practice needs it done, every season. Every January, practices turn away clients for lack of trained preparers. This is the training those seats are waiting for.
Course 1 is also available on its own as Level 1 ($297) — and carries straight into the full certificate, with nothing done twice.
At a glance
The certificate in three numbers
~50 hours · ~10 weeks
About 5 hours a week at the printed pace — built to finish ahead of tax season when you start in the fall.
5 practice returns · 1 timed capstone set
The Practicum works five full returns end to end; the capstone is three complete returns under time, at 100% mechanical accuracy against the answer key.
$497 one time · Level 1 at $297
The full stack at $497, or start with Level 1 at $297 and stack up. Tax preparers earn a median in the ~$54,500–$60,930 band (BLS summaries) — the occupation’s figure, quoted with its source, never a promise.
Your guide through the program
Khloe fronts every course in the stack
Open the program and the first face you see is Khloe's. She welcomes you in, walks you through how the program runs, and opens each course with a study-guide briefing — what it covers, what students trip on, and what to do next.
Her Welcome for this program states the certificate’s fence in her own voice, in the first three minutes: what it is, and what it is not.
The stack
Four courses, one credential
Knowledge first, legal frame second, practice last — the order a practice would train you in.
Federal Individual Tax I · ~14 hours
The 1040 and everything that feeds it: income, filing status, dependents, and the standard-versus-itemized call.
- The 1040 — the map of the whole return
- Filing status — the five doors
- Dependents — the tests that decide
Federal Individual Tax II · ~13 hours
Credits in depth, the self-employment return, rentals, and the rest of Schedule 1 — one household, every schedule.
- Credits I & II — family, education, energy
- Self-employment & Schedule C
- Rentals and royalties — Schedule E
The Preparer’s Legal Frame · ~9 hours
PTIN registration, due diligence, Circular 230 ethics, e-file mechanics, and client-data duties — the frame your work stands inside.
- The PTIN — who needs one, how it works
- Due diligence — the credits that require proof
- Client data — §7216 and keeping records safe
Practicum · ~14 hours
Five full practice returns in training software — including one Schedule C and one credits return — each self-reviewed against the answer key.
- Returns 1–2 — wages, credits, the gig worker
- Returns 3–4 — combined credits, a first rental
- Return 5 — the mixed household
The Gate — Readiness Review + Capstone
Prepare three complete returns under time at 100% mechanical accuracy against the answer key — the standard a client’s refund deserves.
- Certificate Readiness Review — 25 questions at 80%
- No capstone, no certificate — the artifact is the proof
How the certificate is earned
Small gates, honestly set — then one real artifact
- Quick Checks — five questions at the end of every lesson cluster; four of five to move on. Miss it, review, retake — no drama, and no surprises saved up for the end.
- Course Checks — ten questions at 80% at the end of every course in the stack.
- Certificate Readiness Review — 25 questions at 80%, across the whole stack, before the capstone counts.
- The capstone artifact — you prepare three complete returns under time, at 100% mechanical accuracy. Graded against the program's published checklist. It is the proof the certificate stands on.
Claims fence, printed on purpose: this is a WBI certificate of completion. It is not an IRS credential. Preparers register for their own PTIN with the IRS — Course 3 teaches that frame in full. The program also maps the IRS Annual Filing Season Program honestly, as a road beyond this certificate.
After the certificate
Your next door: a season of work — or a practice of your own
The closing lesson walks three doors: the Financial Services Academy for graduates building a tax practice; the Institute’s seasonal preparer network, including Community Solutions Financial’s own bench; and the licensing ladder for career stackers. Graduates leave knowing which door is theirs and what it costs — in writing.

Enrollment has not yet opened for this certificate; the button above notifies our enrollment team — email admin@buildingmywealthinstitute.com and ask for the Tax Preparer Certificate notify list. This program is tax education. It does not register you with the IRS, and completing it does not by itself authorize you to prepare returns for compensation — PTIN registration is covered in Course 3.
